Pennsylvania Protects Firefighters from Toxic PFAS

“Every one of us is regularly exposed to harmful PFAS, but because of the extreme concentrations of PFAS in firefighting foams, our firefighters face far greater risks. This is a victory for everyone across the political spectrum who worked on this, but the firefighters themselves deserve the most credit for making it happen. We should all feel good about helping those who so selflessly risk their lives to keep us safe every day.”

— Sean Hoffmann, Legislative Director of Clean Air Action

Pennsylvania recently passed legislation prohibiting the manufacture, sale, and use of PFAS-laden firefighting foam.

SB 980 would phase out firefighting foam containing PFAS, while providing support for fire departments to safely dispose of existing supplies and transition to PFAS-free alternatives.

This bill protects firefighters and communities from exposure to toxic "forever chemicals," helps prevent contamination of drinking water and the environment, and promotes the use of safer firefighting products that are already widely available and effective.

Clean Air Action, along with several organizations including Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters, PennEnvironment, Clean Water Action, Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania, Sierra Club Pennsylvania Chapter, and many legislative allies, proudly helped advance this policy.

This is an important step toward protecting our firefighters, safeguarding our communities, and preserving our environment for future generations.
