Tell Congress: No deceptive corporate-spun policy that will unleash plastic burning industry.

The U.S. House of Representatives is considering two deceptive ‘chemical recycling’ bills that altogether would mean these toxic and false recycling technologies would be allowed to operate without any environmental or human health safeguards. Furthermore, their covert use could lead to false advertising, such as labeling products as recyclable or claiming a specific percentage of recycled content.

Together, these bills are a wolf in sheep’s clothing using deceptive language that would allow dangerous plastic burning to count as “recycled” content. The plastic industry’s influence on the writing of these bills frames the policy as a positive way to enforce recycling transparency. If passed, these bad bills would also be a boon for plastic incineration/“chemical recycling."

The Recycled Materials Attribution Act (H.R. 7502) and the Packaging and Claims Knowledge Act (H.R. 6832) would give the producers of consumer products the power to label products as “recyclable” or made from a certain percentage of recycled content with no oversight from independent scientists or government agencies.

Chemical recycling and plastic pyrolysis technologies have devastating impacts on our environmental and public health, and we are seeing recognition of that through the development of significant opposition across the country. These bills are the wrong way to address our plastic crisis and represent an industry attempt to avoid protective regulations and gain taxpayer-funded subsidies. Please take action today to tell your congressional representatives these deceptive plastic policies threaten our health.
