Urgent: Tell Congress To Protect Us From the Worst Polluters by Voting To Preserve the Waste Emissions Charge
A vote is coming up in Congress that will likely decide the future of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Waste Emissions Charge; a powerful tool for the EPA to rein in deeply harmful methane emissions from America's biggest polluters. President Joe Biden established this methane pollution fee through his historic climate legislation passed in 2022. Reducing methane pollution is the fastest, most cost-effective way to immediately slow our current rate of climate change, create more jobs in the methane mitigation industry, and protect the health of our families.
Unfortunately, the new Congress is swiftly moving on a vote to immediately eliminate the methane fee at a time when we should be ramping up our efforts to fight climate change, not undermining them. This commonsense program only affects the largest facilities that emit 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent or more and do not comply with federal standards.
With attacks on our public health coming at a frightening pace, we need Congress to hold onto as much of the critical climate progress we made during the Biden Administration as possible.
We urge you to take action today and tell Congress to vote to save the methane fee with a NO vote on H.J. Res. 35.
We appreciate you taking the time to take action.
